The
spectacular Excelsior Power Company Building cast iron sign has been
hidden here on 33 Gold Street since 1888. The Queen Anne style building
was designed by William Grinnell.
Gold Street, seen here near its
intersection with Fulton, gives you a good idea of the narrowness of the
streets in the area; they were originally built for horse and oxcarts and
foot traffic, not cars. The street is named for long-since leveled Golden
Hill, which was in turn named for the color of a wheat grown in the area.
