Built as an exclusive clubhouse, it was progressively the Monroe Club,
the Royal Arcanum Club, and in 1907, through the efforts of a young
priest, the Cathedral Club, a Roman Catholic fraternal organization. The
priest went on to become Cardinal Mundelein of Chicago. The St. Mark’s
facade is continued in spirit by the adjacent Montauk (Nos. 80-82) and
Lenox (Nos. 76-78) apartment buildings, bay-windowed in brick and
brownstone, a handsome tiled pyramid centered atop. |
